Georgia’s Citizenry Reacts to Nuclear Power Proposal

Georgia, the state whose dearth of water had this year’s presidential candidates talking — albeit with parched throats — is now hoping to expand its water-intensive nuclear power plant in Waynesboro. But not every Georgian consents to the idea of adding two new reactors to the original plant.

In addition to fears about the physical and political safety of the expansion, residents of Georgia point out that the plant requires huge amounts of water. From the nuclear plant’s building to its operating, the already stressed Savannah River would be expected to feed its thirst. Proponents of the idea, however, worry that without sufficient nuclear power, dirty and expensive coal might be the only alternative.
