Un-ease and Dis-ease a Crippling Combination for Democratic Republic of Congo

As emerging conflicts in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) displace communities, the nation’s populous is suffering from increasing levels of disease — such as malaria, diarrhea, dehydration and respiratory distress. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), cholera cases have grown thrice as common since October, CNN reports.

With more frequent violent clashes between various rebel groups within the DRC, the volume of people going without access to clean water and proper sanitation continues to grow. “The numbers arriving at the hospital have gone through the roof,” Dr. Louis Kamate of the Virunga Referral Hospital in Goma reports. Nearly 250,000 people have been displaced, making the total number countrywide — 800,000 before recent violence — now over 1 million.
