Dr. Gleick,

Your ideas on peak water are golden. I had a fever and have also been working on a paper and all i saw was something about population and freaked out. No disrepect to you. May the force be with you!

I agree with most points. However, I don't agree that we have a real chance of avoiding widespread famine, warfare over the resource, and profound negative change. While the rate of population growth is slowing, in my lifetime (B 1941) the human population of the world has more than tripled. I live in China where the water is just gone. There is no other word for it. The water is gone. 1.4 Billion people here, 1.4 billion in India, and millions in SE Asia depend on the Himalayan watershed, and it will be gone in a very few years (25-40). There is no answer to this problem. The richest and most powerful know that there is no answer, and will be on their airplanes for some oasis when the music stops. It is good timing that I am nearly 68, and not 18, as are some of my students. I am very glad that I will also be gone before the real problems start.

Certainly religion and sex taboos are a great obstacle in that direction. It is ironic that in the US, supposed to be highly educated, it will be as much as an uphill battle as in some of the not so developed countries.

The other face of this issue: dominance
Of course big demographics will not guarantee religious or political dominance, but it is certainly a factor.

Religion is so frequently used for political ends, this is just another example.
