Hello David,

I read about your EcoTact toilet projects in Nairobi and was very impressed. I have been requested to do something similar in my country (Liberia) I would like to email or call you to get some information related to your toilet project. Please send me your contact information so that we can discuss. Thanks a lot.

[...] David Kuria and Ecotact Posted on June 16, 2010 by marcorafanelli One of our primary objectives on this trip will be to study water and sanitation models that are in place in Nairobi to determine how our Rotary plan can learn from them, and perhaps even incorporate their technology or business models. The primary contact for this purpose is David Kuria, founder and CEO of Ecotact, a Nairobi-based social enterprise that builds and manages toilet facilities in Nairobi and surrounding environs. David is a native Kenyan, and an architect by training. David has received many accolades for his innovative work in this area, and was named an Ashoka fellow in 2007 and won an “Outstanding Regional Social Entrepreneur” award by the World Economic Forum in 2009. Ecotact’s main product is the “Ikotoilet“, a toilet “mall” that offers clean water and toilet facilities for a fee. David has approached the implementation of the Ikotoilet in a unique and innovative manner through partnerships with local entrepreneurs. Successful Ikotoilets are surrounded by a variety of enterprises, offering patrons services such as shoe shines, magazines, and cold drinks. The intent of this model is to create multiple reasons for the public to visit the facilities, which stimulates business and also decreases the stigma commonly associated with talking about hygiene and sanitation in Kenya. In order to maximize the good that these facilities are generating, Ecotact uses the Ikotoilets as a platform to educate the public about the importance of hygiene in disease prevention. David addressed their approach in an interview with circleofblue.org: [...]
