The Stream, June 20: Assessing Water-Energy Relationships in Jordan

Water and Energy
To improve decision-making about water and energy, researchers at Harvard University’s Belfer Center for Science and International Affairs have developed a method for analyzing links between countries’ water and energy resources, as well as the institutions and stakeholders that manage these resources. Their study, which applies the method to Jordan, was published in the journal Energy Strategy Reviews.

Storm damage to power lines linking the Kainji hydroelectric dam to Niger’s capital and southwest regions has resulted in three weeks of power outages, Reuters reported. Water has been cut off in some communities.

WASH
Improving water supply and sanitation in the developing world requires a change in habits as well as improved wells and purification processes, according to NPR. Aid workers are finding that even when supplied with improved water sources and chlorine, many households still end up with contaminated water because of dirty water containers or a failure to use the purifying chemical.

Great Lakes
Water levels in the Great Lakes remain historically low, but withdrawals for bottled water are an unlikely cause, writes Mark Torregrossa for MLive.com. He also discusses the effect of municipal water use on lake levels.
