The Stream, April 5: Melting Glaciers, Ozone Loss

Some of Patagonia’s glaciers are melting up to 100 times faster than at any time in the last 350 years, according to a study by Aberystwyth University. The findings have worrying implications for crop irrigation and water supplies globally.

Meanwhile, the European Space Agency has measured record loss of ozone over Arctic that might be linked to climate change.

Tar Sands
A leaked letter from the Canadian government to the European Commission warns that the European Union’s planned environmental laws could create a trade conflict over Canada’s tar sands. Canada has previously indicated that it might take the matter to the World Trade Organization.

Carbon Farming Initiative
Reuters explains Australia’s planned market for carbon offsets from farms. If approved, the initiative will become the world’s first nationally legislated scheme to trade greenhouse gas offsets from farm projects that reduce emissions or lock away carbon.

Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Complex
Radioactive water in and around the reactor buildings at Japan’s damaged Fukushima nuclear power plant is the main obstacle for the repair work at the facility, The Wall Street Journal reports. Yet, a week after the problem was identified, very little of the toxic water has been pumped out of the plant. Japan is seeking help from Russia.
