LELAND, MI – SEPTEMBER, 1997: A Great Lakes freighter charts the Manitou Passage off Leland in northwest lower Michigan at sunset. This channel between the Manitou and Beaver islands and the Lake Michigan shoreline offers a swift and protected course for vessels sailing north from Chicago, IL, to the Straits of Mackinac, but the waters can be treacherous, as the many historical shipwrecks attest. To the right of the freighter lies a 75-foot light tower, anchored to the shoals, known as “The Crib.” (photo by J. Carl Ganter/Getty Images)
