Red tide toxic algae blooms accumulate along the coasts, turning large swaths of the shallow, warm coastal waters a dark red color. Because the toxins can accumulate in the tissues of shellfish, making them poisonous to humans, shellfish harvesters must wait until the algae is no longer detectable in the water and the shellfish are deemed safe.
