Over the last quarter century, and with quickening resolve during the last decade, Oakland underwent a city makeover. Ardently supported by residents and business executives, the city steadily injected much more ecologically sensitive operating practices into its operating systems – from waste management to transit, energy efficient building codes to carbon-limiting port and electrical utility operations. Downtown open spaces now are alive with business and civic energy.
