Franklin L. Kury, during his first House bid in 1966, ran on the platform of Clean Streams, Clean Politics during a time when the coal industry was largely unregulated. He was voted in by a public tired of seeing “dead fish and dirty streams.” Kury served on the legislature from 1966 to 1971, which passed many environmental protection laws, including removing the exemption for coal companies from the water pollution regulations.
