Circle of Blue, the journalism and science project reporting the global freshwater crisis, seeks one or more interns for Summer 2009, Fall 2009, and Winter 2010. Circle of Blue is the leading news organization at the front lines of global freshwater crisis, reporting with solid journalism and science the extreme challenges and the complexity of solutions. Circle of Blue generates the fresh, objective reportage necessary for reasoned decision-making in the 21st century, while avoiding the “advocacy” label and adhering to SPJ and Poynter standards of journalism. Circle of Blue has presented at the Aspen Ideas Festival, World Economic Forum, Clinton Global Initiative and Aspen Environment Form. Circle of Blue is an independent nonprofit affiliate of the nonpartisan Pacific Institute, the leading think tank for water-issue research and policy.

The position/s involve original reporting and packaging of multimedia news for an international audience.

We have limited internship positions that offer stipends. This position is unpaid. The intern is responsible for housing, expenses and his/her own travel to and from Traverse City, Mi.

Circle of Blue is also an official site for Northwestern University’s Medill School of Journalism Residency Program.

Criteria
• Exceptional writing and communications skills.
• Fluency in online media production, including video, audio and multimedia editing and packaging.
• Ability to be productive under tight deadlines.
• Strong research and analytical abilities, embracing all tools of enterprise reporting.
• Ability to work independently and as a member of a team.
• Fluent English required; fluent French, Spanish and/or Chinese a plus.
• Savvy with advanced communications technology.
• Keen attention to detail and accuracy.
• Passion for journalism; intense curiosity and creative approach to challenging assignments.

Preferred
• Ready capacity to explore complex international issues and connections.
• Previous success working across cultures, geography and time zones.
• Experience navigating United Nations, governmental and NGO reports, studies and contacts.
• International travel; first-hand experience with global water issues.
• Apple Mac OSX savvy.
