The Stream, May 31: Turkey’s Massive Water Projects
India and Pakistan are in the midst of talks to reduce troops situated above the Siachen Glacier in the northern part of the disputed Kashmir region, Reuters reports. The glacier is also a source of melt water for Pakistan’s rivers.
Turkey is building scores of dams, hydropower schemes and nuclear power plants, the Guardian reports. But the giant projects are angering villagers and environmental groups alike.
After closing seven nuclear power plans in response to the Fukushima disaster in March, Germany now plans a full “exit from nuclear energy” by 2022, UPI reports.
The lingering drought in China’s Yangtze River Basin has so far affected 35 million people and caused economic losses worth $2.3 billion, UPI reports, citing official sources.
Meanwhile, 12 miners are trapped in a coal mine in southwest China’s Guizhou Province after the coal mine got flooded over the weekend.
