The refinery’s cracking towers and processing vessels rise like a giant steel curtain above surrounding neighborhoods and the Lake Michigan shoreline. The Whiting refinery, which dates from 1889, is the largest on the Great Lakes and seventh largest in the nation. It is capable of producing 405,000 barrels of fuel per day.
