Alaskan mine pollution poses potential threat to Salmon industry

ANCHORAGE - Alaskan voters turned down an initiative to control the toxic pollutants the state’s newer mines could dump into the waters. At least 57 percent of voters rejected the option. According to the AP, mining provides 5,500 jobs and nearly $200 million a year in revenue.
Those who supported the proposal note that the toxins are likely to do significant harm to Alaska’s Salmon fisheries. The industry offers 12,000 jobs and over $250 million every year to the state’s economy.
