Decades of dumping bring Chitlopakkam Lake to the edge


CHENNAI, India — A constant influx of wastewater and sewage into Chitlappakam Lake has left the reservoir contaminated and unfit for use. That’s according to residents living along the lake’s shore. With earlier plans for lake cleanup falling short of expectations, unhappy residents with the support of the local panchayats, or village councils, are planning protests against the municipal government.

“Normal life of residents in the area is disturbed,” one resident told India’s Express Buzz, “the Tambaram Municipality has no regrets in using our lake as a wastewater dump.” The lake is the primary source of water for some 25,000 plus residents living in the suburbs of the south-eastern India city of Chennai.
