Black Gold Blues: Oil Stains Reveal Resource beneath Russian Lake

Comprising 20 percent of the world’s fresh water supply, southern Siberia’s Lake Baikal might also provide answers to how oil forms. Scientists from the Limnological Institute at the Russian Academy of Sciences now have access to Mir submersibles that should allow them a closer look at an amazing phenomenon.

They have studied the possible organic formation of oil for years and believe the lake produces 4 tons of oil each year. “We believe that oil is being formed nowadays from fossils and organic remains at a depth of 2-3 kilometres,” academician Mikhail Grachev told Russia Today.
