Race to the Finish: Coal Run Receives Water, City and County Plan to Appeal

ZANESVILLE, Ohio – Coal Run, a community denied water on allegedly racial grounds, can now turn on the tap at will. While the lawsuit filed to compensate for the 50 year delay has surfaced a few old prejudices, most agree that the settlement of $11 million to 67 plaintiffs is well deserved.

Resident Dorreta Hales reflects to the New York Times her initial satisfaction, saying “I could wash clothes whenever I wanted. I could go out and water the flowers.” But the struggle is not yet over. Both the City of Zanesville and Muskingum County still plan to appeal the ruling.
